When laying a brick border around flower beds, what is the procedure for setting a good foundation?

have flower bed area that i would perhaps like to make a brick mortar border around inset into the ground.

what would I need to do to make sure it is solid and doesnt come apart ?

how deep should i pour a foundation,etc?

Thanks for your answers!

I am wishing to set them vertical inside the ground.
not really sticking up very high.

how high are you building?
if its just a brick on edge or some thing, i would just bed it on 2 or 3 inches of mortar.
if it is a few courses of brick or if its going to be where people are walking on i would dig down about 6 inches and puor 3 or 4 inches of concrete then build on it.
