Nov. 18, 2009: Visions & Voices presents Communication Across Borders: An International Dialogue
November 9, 2009, marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Choreographer Nejla Yatkin was a teenager in Berlin living with the reality of the divided city. She experienced the threat of conflict between East and West and saw the world open up when the wall went down. The event will include a screening and short performance of a contemporary dance piece by Yatkin that reflects and subverts the interaction between individuals and the emotional impact of barriers. Following the presentation, Carola Weil, Annenberg associate dean for planning and strategic initiatives, will moderate a discussion with Yatkin and Annenberg faculty members Sandy Tolan, Josh Kun and Roberto Suro. They will focus on the challenges and opportunities of communicating across boundaries – cultural, disciplinary, and physical – from the Berlin Wall to the U.S.-Mexican border and the fence between Israel and Palestinian territories. Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin wall, a new wall—one that will divide a continent—is under construction on the US border with Mexico. And a government that once called for an end to such division is today its gatekeeper.
Former East Germany officer Klaus-Peter Renneberg defended the border for almost a decade. He speaks to Telegraph TV in Berlin about those that got across and the careless joke that cost him his commission.
Wildlife and the Border Wall – This is a video about the wildlife, landscapes and people of the borderlands of the United States and Mexico. It is part of a project I am working on with the International League of Conservation Photographers to highlight the ecological and human impacts of the border wall the United States is currently building along our southern border.
