I want to paint my walls but the previous occupants glued a large border around the wall. I have stripped it off but have ben left with a 12" band of glue around the room which I can’t paint over. Any ideas how to get it off? I’ve tried a steamer but it just melts it and goes all messy then dries again.
mix a solution of white vinegar & water (about 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar) then put it in a spray bottle, spray the glue area, wait a minute or two then scrape off, you may have to increase amount of vinegar if glue is really thick or spray the area more than once to remove all glue, hope this helps

mixture of vinegar and water. I do not recommend chemical filled products, but can use window cleaner if you have nothing else.

Try fast orange or pumice cleaner it may take a little elbow grease but it will work.

there are products made specifally for wallpaper adhesive remover that can be purchased very reasonable at any hardware store, but the trick here is to soak the glue for 10 to 15 min or until the glue releases and can be wiped off with a sponge if this does not work and the adhesive is not water based some type of chemical may have to be used denatured alcohol perhaps absolute worst case scenario skim wall with taping mud sand prime and paint good luck

If its tacky or not hard…try hot soapy water. Or a mixture of vinegar & warm water.
Or if its hard enough, use a hand sander to sand it away so its smooth enough to paint.

Or fabric softener in hot water. Soak well, wait, and wash. You may have to repeat.
